Imagine being sidelined for over two months with a nagging injury, only to return stronger than ever, dunking like it was just another day at the office. That’s exactly what SEC Preseason Player of the Year Otega Oweh has done, and his comeback is nothing short of inspiring. But here’s where it gets even more impressive: after battling turf toe, Oweh didn’t just return to practice—he dove headfirst into every drill, every competition, and even pulled off jaw-dropping dunks on his very first day back. Talk about a statement return!
Oweh’s journey back to the court officially began on Monday when he rejoined the Kentucky men’s basketball team for practice. Speaking to reporters at SEC Media Days in Birmingham on Tuesday, he shared his relief and gratitude. ‘I’m feeling good, no restrictions,’ Oweh said. ‘It’s a blessing. I’m just thankful it was this type of injury and nothing worse. I’m getting back into the rhythm, and I’m in everything—every drill, every rep. I’m happy.’
And happy doesn’t even begin to describe his coaches and teammates. Head Coach Pope couldn’t help but chuckle as he recounted Oweh’s first practice back. ‘He got a steal, raced down the court, and took off from outside the free-throw line for a dunk,’ Pope said. ‘As a coach, you just shake your head and think, ‘Young people—we love these young people.’ Otega’s competitive drive is unstoppable. You can’t turn it off.’
But here’s where it gets controversial: While Oweh’s return is undoubtedly a win for Kentucky, some might question whether rushing back into high-intensity play is the wisest move after such a lengthy absence. Oweh himself admitted to being a bit sore the next morning, though he insists he’s already feeling like his old self. Pope, however, isn’t worried. ‘If anyone can overcome missing so much offseason practice, it’s a senior guard with nearly 100 college games under his belt,’ Pope said. ‘He’s been out for almost 10 weeks, but he’s the guy to handle it. I don’t have a lot of concerns about his health moving forward.’
With less than two weeks until Kentucky’s first exhibition game against top-ranked Purdue, Oweh’s return couldn’t have come at a better time. His presence not only boosts the team’s morale but also adds a proven leader to the lineup. And this is the part most people miss: Oweh’s comeback isn’t just about basketball—it’s a testament to resilience, determination, and the unyielding spirit of an athlete who refuses to be kept down.
So, here’s a thought-provoking question for you: Do you think Oweh’s aggressive return to full-contact practice is a smart move, or is he risking further injury? Let us know in the comments below!
